Shopify POS in Austria 2026: Card Payments with SumUp and POSBridge
Shopify POS in Austria: why card payments require an external terminal and how POSBridge creates a near-integrated SumUp Solo workflow.
· 9 min
Shopify POS can be used in Austria to manage carts, products, inventory, customers, and orders. Card payments have one important limitation: Shopify Payments is available in Austria for online selling only, not for in-person payments through Shopify POS.
Austrian merchants therefore need an external card terminal and a third-party payment processor. Without an additional connection, staff must re-enter the Shopify POS total on the terminal and then record the payment manually in Shopify.
POSBridge reduces this workflow to the necessary steps: the app sends the Shopify POS cart total automatically to SumUp Solo and monitors the payment. To the best of our knowledge, POSBridge is the only ready-made solution that connects SumUp Solo to Shopify POS with this level of automation.
Important clarification: POSBridge is not a native Shopify payment method or a payment provider. After a successful SumUp payment, staff select a custom payment method created in Shopify POS and complete the sale. You can choose any name for this method. POSBridge handles amount transfer and payment confirmation but does not mark the Shopify order as paid by itself.
Does Shopify POS work in Austria?
Yes. Shopify POS can be used in Austria as point-of-sale software. You can sell products, synchronize inventory between the online store and physical locations, manage customer profiles, and keep orders in Shopify.
The restriction concerns integrated in-person payment processing through Shopify Payments, not Shopify POS itself. Shopify explicitly confirms in its Help Center that Shopify Payments is available for online selling only in Austria. In-person payments require an external card terminal with a third-party processor.
This places Austria in a different position from countries where Shopify Payments supports POS transactions with compatible Shopify hardware. A Shopify card reader is therefore not an alternative to an external terminal for an Austrian POS setup.
The usual workflow with an external terminal
- Staff add products to the Shopify POS cart.
- They read the final total.
- They enter the amount again on the external card terminal.
- The customer pays.
- Staff select a custom payment method in Shopify POS.
- They complete the sale in Shopify POS.
This workflow works, but it introduces avoidable risks: an incorrectly entered amount, a cancelled payment mistakenly recorded as successful, or a discrepancy that is difficult to match between the SumUp transaction and Shopify order.
What POSBridge automates
POSBridge uses the official SumUp Cloud API for SumUp Solo. Its POS extension reads the current Shopify cart and sends the amount to the assigned terminal through the cloud.
- Staff open the POSBridge tile in the Shopify POS Smart Grid.
- POSBridge shows the cart total and assigned terminal.
- The amount is sent to SumUp Solo.
- The card payment is completed on the terminal.
- POSBridge monitors the status and confirms success.
- Staff select their custom payment method in Shopify POS and complete the order.
The main benefit is automatic amount transfer. The final Shopify step intentionally remains with staff because SumUp processes the funds outside Shopify and POSBridge is not a payment gateway.
What you need in Austria
- A Shopify store with Shopify POS: POS Pro is generally not required for basic use of the POSBridge tile.
- An Austrian SumUp account: existing accounts can be connected, while new customers can use the POSBridge partner route.
- A SumUp Solo: POSBridge officially supports only this model in Cloud API mode. SumUp Air, SumUp 3G, and SumUp Solo Lite are not supported.
- A stable internet connection: Shopify POS and SumUp Solo must be online but do not need the same Wi-Fi network.
- A personal POSBridge installation link: POSBridge is currently distributed as a Shopify custom app.
- A separate RKSV solution if the rules apply to your business: POSBridge does not provide an RKSV signature or cash-register compliance functionality.
Request POSBridge as a custom app
POSBridge is not currently listed publicly on the Shopify App Store. Installation is prepared personally for each Shopify store.
- Open the “Request access” form on getposbridge.com.
- Enter your contact details, Shopify store URL, and preferred plan.
- After review, we prepare the custom app for your store.
- You receive your personal installation link within 24 hours.
- Approve the requested Shopify access permissions and install POSBridge.
- Select the appropriate plan variant and complete billing through Stripe.
After activation, the trial shown for the plan begins. As of July 2026, it lasts seven days.
Setup summary
- Connect SumUp: open POSBridge settings and select “Connect with SumUp”. Authorization uses SumUp OAuth 2.0; no manual API key is required.
- Put Solo into API mode: log out on the terminal, open Connections → API → Connect, and generate an 8- or 9-character pairing code.
- Pair the terminal: enter the code under POSBridge → Terminals.
- Assign a location: assign Solo to the appropriate Austrian Shopify location.
- Create a payment method: add a custom payment method in Shopify POS using any name you prefer, such as “Card payment” or “External terminal”.
- Add the POSBridge tile: add the app extension to the Shopify POS Smart Grid and open it once to register the device.
- Run a test payment: send a low-value cart total to Solo, pay, and then complete the sale through your custom payment method in Shopify POS.

Costs for Austrian merchants
POSBridge plans currently start at €4.99 per month. The exact price depends on plan, transaction limit, and included features. See the current POSBridge pricing page.
New Austrian SumUp accounts registered through the designated POSBridge partner link currently receive the following agreed partner rates:
- 1.15% for domestic debit and credit cards within the EEA instead of the 1.39% standard rate.
- 1.39% for premium, international, and business cards.
The partner rate is applied automatically in SumUp's backend for qualifying new registrations. Existing accounts generally retain their current terms. The terms displayed by SumUp during registration and in the merchant account always take precedence. Rates verified in July 2026.
Which payment methods does SumUp Solo accept in Austria?
SumUp currently lists the following cards and contactless payment methods for Austria, among others:
- Visa and V PAY
- Mastercard and Maestro
- American Express
- Discover and Diners Club
- UnionPay
- Apple Pay and Google Pay through NFC
Actual acceptance can depend on card type, origin, SumUp terms, and current product conditions. This guide intentionally makes no claims about the market share of individual Austrian debit-card brands.
RKSV: in-person card payments count as cash transactions
The frequently repeated claim that Austria's RKSV rules cover physical cash only and exclude card payments is incorrect. According to information from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, debit and credit card payments made in person at the point of supply also count as cash transactions for these purposes.
The cash-register requirement generally applies when the statutory revenue thresholds are exceeded. The commonly stated BMF thresholds are more than €15,000 in annual revenue and more than €7,500 in annual cash transactions. Because in-person card payments count towards cash transactions, they cannot simply be excluded from this assessment.
POSBridge does not replace an RKSV solution. POSBridge connects Shopify POS to SumUp Solo and automates amount transfer. It does not create an RKSV signature, provide a technical security device, or certify the tax compliance of your complete cash-register system. If the requirement applies, you need a separate specialized solution and should confirm the setup with your tax adviser.
A standard Shopify POS receipt is not automatically an RKSV-compliant receipt either. Compliance depends on the complete register system, including the data collection protocol, security device, signature, and legally required receipt fields.
Which Austrian merchants benefit from this setup?
- Boutiques and specialist shops: online and store inventory remain in Shopify while SumUp processes card payments.
- Pop-ups and markets: Solo can be used on the move as long as both the terminal and Shopify POS device are online.
- Cafés and small hospitality businesses: automatic amount transfer reduces typing errors; sector-specific register and RKSV requirements must be assessed separately.
- Multiple locations: terminals can be assigned to locations and POS devices. Available quantities and automation features depend on the POSBridge plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify POS be used in Austria?
Yes. Shopify POS works as point-of-sale software in Austria. Shopify Payments cannot be used there for in-person POS payments, so a third-party processor and external card terminal are required.
Can I use a Shopify card reader in Austria?
Not for integrated payments through Shopify Payments POS. Shopify Payments is available in Austria for online selling only. In-person payments require an external terminal.
What does POSBridge automate?
POSBridge sends the Shopify POS cart total to SumUp Solo and monitors the payment status. Staff then select their self-named custom payment method in Shopify POS and complete the order.
Is POSBridge a native Shopify payment method?
No. POSBridge is a custom app and terminal integration, not a payment gateway. It creates a near-integrated workflow without processing the funds inside Shopify.
Is POSBridge RKSV compliant?
POSBridge is not an RKSV or cash-register compliance solution. If your business is subject to the requirement, you need a separate solution designed for it. Confirm your specific setup with your tax adviser.
Do card payments count as cash transactions in Austria?
Yes. According to BMF information, debit and credit card payments made in person at the point of supply count as cash transactions for the cash-register requirement.
Which SumUp terminal works with POSBridge?
POSBridge officially supports only SumUp Solo in Cloud API mode.
Conclusion
Shopify POS can be used in Austria, but in-person processing through Shopify Payments is unavailable. An external card terminal is therefore not an optional workaround; it is Shopify's documented route for accepting card payments in person.
POSBridge connects the Shopify POS cart to SumUp Solo and removes manual amount entry. The Shopify order is then completed transparently through a custom payment method whose name you choose. To the best of our knowledge, POSBridge is the only ready-made solution that automatically connects SumUp Solo to Shopify POS.
Austrian merchants might also need a separate specialized RKSV solution. POSBridge is responsible only for the card-terminal integration.
