Connect SumUp Solo to Shopify POS: Step-by-Step Guide 2026
Connect SumUp Solo to Shopify POS with the current OAuth, API mode, terminal pairing, POS tile, and checkout workflow.
· 11 min
Do you use Shopify POS for in-store sales and want to process card payments through SumUp? Without a connection between the two systems, staff normally have to enter the checkout total again on the card terminal. That takes time and can cause typing errors or discrepancies between Shopify and SumUp.
POSBridge connects Shopify POS to SumUp Solo: the app reads the current cart total, sends it to the assigned terminal, and monitors the payment status. You no longer need to type the amount into the terminal manually. This guide takes you from installation to your first real payment.
Important clarification: POSBridge is not a native Shopify payment method or a payment provider. After a successful payment on SumUp Solo, staff record the payment in Shopify POS using a custom payment method and complete the sale there. POSBridge does not mark the Shopify order as paid by itself. It removes the error-prone step of re-entering the amount on the terminal.
What you need
- A Shopify store with Shopify POS: POS Lite is generally sufficient for basic use of the POSBridge tile.
- A SumUp account: you can connect an existing account or open a new account through POSBridge during setup.
- A SumUp Solo: POSBridge officially supports only SumUp Solo with Cloud API mode. SumUp Air, SumUp 3G, and SumUp Solo Lite are not supported.
- An internet connection: Shopify POS, POSBridge, and SumUp Solo must be online. The terminal and the iPad or iPhone do not need to use the same Wi-Fi network.
- A personal POSBridge installation link: POSBridge is currently distributed as a Shopify custom app. After your access request, we prepare the app for your store and send you the link.
Allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes for setup. The actual time mainly depends on whether your SumUp account is already fully verified and whether the terminal needs to install an update.
Step 1: Request access and install POSBridge
- Open getposbridge.com and the “Request access” form.
- Enter your contact details and Shopify store URL, then select the plan you are interested in.
- Submit the request. We review your information, prepare the custom app for your store, and send your personal installation link within 24 hours.
- Open the link using an authorized Shopify account, review the requested access permissions, and confirm installation.
- Open POSBridge, choose the appropriate plan variant, and complete billing through Stripe.
- After Stripe activation, the trial shown for your selected plan begins. As of July 2026, the trial period is seven days.
POSBridge plans currently start at €4.99 per month. Prices, limits, and included features are managed dynamically and may change. Check the current POSBridge pricing page before selecting a plan.
Why a personal link? POSBridge is not currently listed publicly on the Shopify App Store. As a Shopify custom app, the installation is prepared for the specific store and released through an individual link.
Step 2: Use an existing or new SumUp account
Option A: You already have a SumUp account
Open Settings in POSBridge and select Connect with SumUp. You are redirected to the official SumUp sign-in page. Sign in with the account that owns the SumUp Solo and approve the displayed permissions. SumUp then redirects you back to POSBridge.
The connection uses SumUp OAuth 2.0. You do not need to copy an API key or merchant code manually. POSBridge receives the required permissions through the official authorization process and can refresh the connection without storing your SumUp password.
Existing SumUp accounts generally retain their current commercial terms. The POSBridge new-customer rates described below are not applied retroactively to an existing account.
Option B: You need a new SumUp account
Use the SumUp registration link provided during the POSBridge setup. The agreed POSBridge new-customer rates can be applied automatically in the SumUp backend only when the new account is created through this partner route. After registration and verification, connect the account through Connect with SumUp.
Register the account in the country where your business is actually established. Country, currency, business details, and payout account must match your SumUp account.
Step 3: Put SumUp Solo into API mode
POSBridge controls the terminal through the official SumUp Cloud API. The Solo must generate a pairing code once to establish this connection.
- Turn on SumUp Solo and make sure it is connected to the internet.
- Log out on the terminal if a SumUp account is currently signed in. API pairing is initiated while the terminal is logged out.
- Open the Solo's top menu drawer.
- Go to Connections.
- Select API, then select Connect.
- The display shows an 8- or 9-character alphanumeric pairing code.
Can't see the API option? First check that the Solo is logged out and running the latest software. Restart the terminal afterward. POSBridge does not require a “Developer options” menu or a six-digit numeric code.
Step 4: Pair the terminal in POSBridge
- Open Terminals in the POSBridge app.
- Select Pair terminal or Add terminal.
- Enter the pairing code displayed on SumUp Solo.
- Give the terminal a clear name, such as “Main register” or “London till 1”.
- Confirm pairing and wait for the terminal to appear in the list.
If the code is invalid or has expired, generate a new one on the Solo. Both devices need internet access, but they do not need to be on the same local network.
Step 5: Assign the terminal to a Shopify location
Location assignment ensures that POSBridge selects the correct terminal at checkout. This is particularly important when you operate multiple stores or registers.
- Open the newly paired terminal in POSBridge.
- Select Assign.
- Choose the matching Shopify location.
- Save the assignment.
A POS device can later be assigned to a specific terminal. Without a device-specific assignment, POSBridge uses the default terminal for the current location. The number of terminals, POS devices, and locations available depends on your POSBridge plan.
Step 6: Create a custom payment method in Shopify POS
Because SumUp processes the card payment outside Shopify, the payment must be recorded in Shopify POS as a custom payment method. Shopify uses this method to document the sale; SumUp continues to process and pay out the funds.
- Open the Point of Sale sales channel in Shopify Admin.
- Open the settings for Payments or POS customization.
- Add a custom payment method.
- Give it any clear name you prefer, such as Card payment, External terminal, or SumUp.
- Save and activate the method for the relevant POS devices.
The name should match the payment label configured in POSBridge. Shopify occasionally changes navigation in the POS sales channel. If the interface differs, search for “Custom payment methods”.
Step 7: Add the POSBridge tile to the Shopify POS Smart Grid
- Open Shopify POS on your iPad or iPhone.
- Select Add tile in the Smart Grid.
- Select App, then choose POSBridge.
- Add the POSBridge extension and save the layout.
- Open the tile once. This registers the POS device with POSBridge.
You can also configure POS app tiles centrally through Shopify Admin and distribute them to POS devices. Afterward, check the Terminals page in POSBridge to confirm that the POS device is assigned to the correct location or terminal.
Step 8: Run your first payment
- Add a low-value test product to the Shopify POS cart.
- Tap the POSBridge tile in the Smart Grid.
- Check the amount, location, and selected terminal.
- Start the payment. The cart total appears automatically on SumUp Solo.
- Complete the card payment on the terminal.
- Wait until POSBridge confirms the successful SumUp payment.
- Return to Shopify POS checkout, choose the custom payment method you created earlier, and complete the sale.
The final step is required: a success message in POSBridge initially confirms the payment at SumUp. It does not replace checkout completion in Shopify POS. The Shopify order is recorded only after staff select the custom payment method and complete checkout.
After Shopify checkout, POSBridge can use the stored payment references to match the SumUp transaction with the Shopify order. Automatic matching, exports, and advanced reports depend on your selected plan.
The everyday payment workflow
- Scan or select products in Shopify POS.
- Open the POSBridge tile.
- Send the amount to SumUp Solo automatically.
- The customer pays on the terminal.
- Wait for POSBridge to confirm the SumUp payment.
- Select the custom payment method you created earlier in Shopify POS checkout and complete the order.
This removes manual amount entry on the terminal. Shopify checkout intentionally remains with staff because POSBridge is not a native Shopify payment method or payment gateway.
Partner rates for new SumUp accounts
New SumUp accounts registered through the designated POSBridge partner link currently receive the following rates under the POSBridge partner terms. Rates verified in July 2026.
Germany and Austria
1.15% for domestic debit and credit cards within the EEA instead of the 1.39% standard rate. Premium, international, and business cards are charged at 1.39%.
France
1.60% for domestic debit and credit cards within the EEA instead of the 1.75% standard rate. Premium, international, and business cards are charged at 1.75%.
Italy
1.80% for domestic debit and credit cards within the EEA instead of the 1.95% standard rate. Premium, international, and business cards are charged at 1.95%.
The partner rates are applied automatically in SumUp's backend for qualifying new registrations. Existing accounts and merchants in other countries retain their individual or local SumUp terms. The terms displayed by SumUp during registration and in the merchant account always take precedence.
Other POSBridge features at a glance
- Quick Mode: starts payment automatically after a configurable countdown inside the POSBridge modal. Quick Mode is not a payment without a Shopify cart.
- Partial payments: send only part of the cart total to SumUp and collect the remainder separately.
- Multiple terminals and locations: assign terminals to Shopify locations and individual POS devices. Available quantities depend on your plan.
- Transaction matching: POSBridge stores references used to match SumUp payments and Shopify orders later. Automatic matching and exports are plan-dependent.
- Refunds: depending on enabled features and configuration, SumUp refunds can be linked with Shopify returns.
- Receipt information: POSBridge provides references and variables; Shopify POS receipt design remains configured in Shopify.
Common setup problems
API mode is missing on SumUp Solo
Log out on the terminal, check the internet connection, and install any available software updates. Then open the top menu and select Connections → API.
The pairing code is rejected
Generate a new code on the Solo and enter it without extra spaces. The code contains eight or nine letters and numbers. Also check that POSBridge is still connected to the correct SumUp account.
No terminal is available from the POSBridge tile
Check that the Solo is visible in POSBridge, assigned to a Shopify location, and available to the current POS device. Then reopen the tile.
The payment succeeded, but Shopify has no completed order
After SumUp confirmation, select the custom payment method you created in Shopify POS checkout and complete the sale. You can choose its name freely. POSBridge does not perform this Shopify step automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect SumUp to Shopify POS?
Yes. POSBridge transfers the current Shopify POS cart total to an assigned SumUp Solo and monitors the payment status. After successful payment, staff complete the sale in Shopify POS using a custom payment method.
Which SumUp terminal works with POSBridge?
POSBridge officially supports only SumUp Solo in Cloud API mode. SumUp Air, SumUp 3G, and SumUp Solo Lite are not supported.
Do I need to create a SumUp API key?
No. The current standard setup uses SumUp OAuth 2.0. Select “Connect with SumUp” in POSBridge settings, sign in to SumUp, and approve the requested permissions.
Do the terminal and iPad need the same Wi-Fi network?
No. Both devices need to be online, but they can use different internet connections. Communication runs through the SumUp Cloud API.
Does POSBridge complete the Shopify order automatically?
No. POSBridge confirms the SumUp payment and stores references for later matching. Staff then select the custom payment method in Shopify POS and complete the order.
Do I need Shopify POS Pro?
POS Pro is generally not required for basic use of the POSBridge app tile. Any additional Shopify POS functionality available to you depends on your Shopify plan.
How long does setup take?
With a verified SumUp account and an up-to-date Solo, setup usually takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Conclusion
POSBridge brings SumUp Solo into a clear Shopify POS workflow. The cart total is sent to the terminal automatically, payment is monitored, and the transaction can later be matched to the Shopify order. Checkout remains transparent: after payment, staff select the custom payment method created for this purpose in Shopify POS.
You do not need to create SumUp API keys manually. Install POSBridge, connect your SumUp account through OAuth, pair Solo through Connections → API, assign the terminal and location, and configure the POS tile and custom payment method.
